  • FODEN 30 TONNE 8 WHEEL TIPPER S108
    In service: 1985 – 1987

Foden 30 tonner with a Gardner 6LYT 320 engine, later uprated by Gardner to 350 bhp. The tipper body was built by NMI at Barnsley to our spec, the sides were double skinned, the floor was 1/8 steel on top of 1/2″ plywood on top of the aluminium, the welded ali body with barn doors and single ram tipping gear was the second that NMI had built for us and included numerous improvements on the original. The big Gardner was a dream to drive, nearly 16 litres in capacity with fantastic bottom end torque and 350 hp it was unbeatable at the time.

  • FODEN E649 OWT 30 TONNE 8 WHEELER S108
    In service: 1988 – 1994

We took delivery of E649 OWT in April 1988,complete with 13 litre Cat 350,Fuller 13609B gearbox (I think) and another improved NMI ali tipper body with even more reinforcment built in. Kitted out with sun visor and air horns the new shape Foden cab was elevated to clear the big Cat engine and looked very imposing.the paint job on the cab wasn’t too good but this was the first ali body that I’d had painted and NMI did a great job, it made my life a lot easier, no more scrubbing bare ali with steel wool. Another 80 mph motor but was it thirsty and did it black smoke, I could send smoke signals with the vertical exhaust. The Cat was the complete opposite of the previous Gardner, massive top end torque and nothing at the bottom end, easy to stall and very poor at hillstarts or in deep mud, if you kept the revs high though it was a flyer.
